What January feels like

January is when the mist freezes onto everything within reach — railings, trees, lamp posts and the whole Terrapin Point overlook go glassy. The boats are out of the water and Cave of the Winds is stripped back to its frame, but Prospect Point at night with the lights on is the best free show in the state.

Expect about 15 days with something falling — rain, snow, or the sloppy mix in between. The air runs dry — whatever the thermometer says, it wears easy. Nearly every night dips below freezing.
