What February feels like
February is the island at its most extreme: ice across the straits, snowmobiles instead of bikes on M-185, and nearly every hotel, shop, and fudge kitchen shut until spring. Getting here means arranging a small plane out of Pellston or a ride over the ice, not booking a ferry ticket.
Expect about 11 days with something falling — rain, snow, or the sloppy mix in between. The air runs dry — whatever the thermometer says, it wears easy. Nearly every night dips below freezing.
Can you swim?
The lake runs about 33° — frigid — locals in wetsuits only.
